Lyrics and Images #4 https://www.joeepsteinphotography.com/blog/2020/4/lyrics-and-images-4 A few years ago my wife, son and I traveled to meet Guatemala. One of our stops was at Lake Atitlán.  What a beautiful place.  During a day long tour around the lake, I was able to make this photo of a man in his boat rowing from one side to the other.  I thought the lyrics of the band Yes, from their hit 'Roundabout' on the 1971 album 'Fragile' was appropriate to describe this wonderful place.  That album one one of the staples in my record collection as a teenager and I was lucky enough to see the band in concert in the late 80's.  around_the_lake-webaround_the_lake-webScenes around Guatemala. Lyrics and Images #3 https://www.joeepsteinphotography.com/blog/2020/4/lyrics-and-images-3 On September 11, 2001 I was working for the Star-Ledger as a staff photographer.  Watching the Twin Towers burn and then come down is something I will never forget.  In the following days, the paper instituted 24 hour coverage at ground zero.  I spent several shifts in lower Manhattan in the weeks that followed.  Now there are memorials in many towns in the tri-state area, and I fear most people walk by them without a second thought.  I combined some lyrics from James Taylor's Fire and Rain with this photo of the Jersey City 9/11 Memorial located at Exchange Place.   Never forger those who lost their lives that day, in the weeks, months and years after. reflections of memories-webreflections of memories-webReflections of lower Manhattan in the area near One World Trade Center as people pass the 9/11 Memorial at Exchange Place. 4/6/20 Jersey City, NJ photo by Joe Epstein/JoeEpsteinPhotography.com

Images and Lyrics #2 https://www.joeepsteinphotography.com/blog/2020/4/images-and-lyrics-2 I have been fortunate to be able to spend a great amount of time on Long Beach Island (the Jersey Shore for those who aren't familiar) going back to my high school days.  My parents rented a house in Beach Haven and Holgate several times in the late 70's and early 80's and that was my introduction to LBI.  That's about the time I began listening to the music of Genesis.  When I was in college, I went to their concert at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, NY - I can still remember being in the center isle about 10 rows away from Phil Collins.  So here is a recent image taken at sunset in Beach Haven, and some lyrics from Home by the Sea. home_by_the_sea_lbi-web1home_by_the_sea_lbi-web1Sunset over Little Egg Harbor Bay . 4/11/20 Beach Haven,NJ photo by Joe Epstein/JoeEpsteinPhotography.com

Images and Lyrics #1 https://www.joeepsteinphotography.com/blog/2020/4/images-and-lyrics-1 Life has changed in so many ways.  We are now living in a way that no one could have imagined about a month ago.  I decided to find lyrics, poems and sayings to combine with my images to provide a little visual inspiration.

When I was in high school, my musical tastes varied widely.  Here is a throwback to The Moody Blues, Nights in White Satin.  Always one of my favorites.  So when I was editing photos from the Pink Moon rising over One World Trade Center, I couldn't help thinking of the end of that song.  So here is the first in what I hope will be many posts.  Stay safe everyone. coldheart-2coldheart-2The Pink Moon rises over lower Manhattan and One World Trade Center as seen from the Jersey City waterfront near Exchange Place. 4/6/20 Jersey City, NJ photo by Joe Epstein/JoeEpsteinPhotography.com

Capturing the Community

Much of Joe Epstein’s photography incorporates the community around him. His portfolio includes many scenes of Hoboken, Jersey City, and New York City. He is drawn to the people, the architecture, and the sprawling landscapes of buildings. Heading Home (above) transforms the mundane aspect of daily commuters' lives into an artistic expression of the city. With many of his photographs which have often also included food, fashion, and portraiture, Joe has penetrated beyond the surface of his subjects with his keen artistic eye imparting his own unique style to his photographs.

“Capturing the image is only part of the process. The computer and memory card may have replaced the chemicals of the darkroom, but my values have not changed. I painstakingly edit each image, bringing to print what I viewed through the lens. Over the years I have refined my technique and trained my eyes to see the world in a unique way. My images go beyond the basics, displaying a vision blended of light, motion, and viewpoint.”

Joe's work has been exhibited in local galleries and fine art shows throughout Metropolitan New York and more recently he was commissioned to photograph for luxury residential development in New Jersey. Joe’s award-winning photos have been recognized by the New York Press Photographers Association, the New Jersey Press Association, New England Press Association, and the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association, and were part of The Star-Ledger's work that won the Pulitzer Prize in 2005.

Joe is now offering some of his locally inspired photographs as giclées including Heading Home on the HobokenArts™ Online Gallery.
